5 Yoga Poses to Increase Happiness

5 Yoga Poses to Increase Happiness

Being pregnant, having a mini around, and not feeling well are definite mood killers. I don’t know, maybe just the hormones alone are enough to impact my overall mood. Still, I find myself having less and less patience, stressing over first-world problems, and whining about how I “feel”. By the end of the day, I just feel like growing roots into my couch and hiding from the world. Then, I take to my journal. When I journal about my day, I tend to look back and think, “Wow, this is so silly. I have nothing to complain about. My needs are met, and most days my wants are met too. ” I have found that by journaling about my “poor me” emotions it buys me some time to step back and view my thoughts from a calm place rather than react from an emotional place. I tend to get worked up over trivial things and then take it out on my sweet and innocent husband. These emotions and problems are my own, and it is my responsibility to manage them. That is why when my day turns sour I like to go for a run, take a bubble bath, roll out my mat, light some candles, and enjoy these 5 yoga poses that I have found increase my level of happiness. I cannot begin to tell you how many melt downs have been avoided from taking the time to take care of myself, by myself. Hopefully they can do the same for you. Enjoy!

  1. Supta Baddha Konasa (Reclined Bound Angle Pose)Focusing on the Inhalation. This is my all time favorite pose, and if you have come to one of my classes then you know that I love to end in this pose. When I am in this pose I feel a sense of relief. I am focused on my belly as it rises with each inhalation, slowing down my breath, holding it in at the top, and then I exhale as if to let out a sigh of relief. We carry so much emotional blockage that creates tightness within in our hips. Hold this pose for a good 5 minutes or more and you will feel an emotional release. There are bigger issues and problems in the world than just our emotions. This pose shows us how to let go. IMG_9952
  2. Camel Pose- Oh sweet Camel pose, how I love thee so. This pose can take me from a stressed out mess to a joyful and sane human being within seconds. I tend to get sad when I feel tired and sluggish, which is why I love incorporating backbends into my practice to give me that extra boost of energy I need.
  3. Headstand- Headstands are definitely my favorite inversion. I prefer to do supported headstands since I usually do them on a paddleboard. Feeling rooted by my forearms allows me to focus on the breath and core while I’m upside down, and also gives me more time to get all of the benefits inversions offer. Inversions are great for your digestion, which definitely plays a role in your overall mood.
  4. Half Pigeon- Ahh, yes! My, “I hate you, no wait, I love you!” pose. This pose is in my daily practice. I have super tight hips and my body craves this pose. I always feel a million times better after I hold this pose for several minutes. I also like to throw in Ujayyi breath while holding it to release tension in the hips and to enhance and empower this pose. IMG_9951
  5. Last but not least, SUN SALUTATIONS! No matter what mood I’m in, if I do a few minutes of sun salutations I start to feel better. Sometimes all you need to feel better is a few minutes of moving the body, dismissing the thoughts, and connecting your breath to each pose. Great way to start the day!!!
